Transfer Devices

  • Transfers can also be made with transfer boards and transfer devices. This will decrease the force needed for lateral movement decreasing risk of injury. (Grevelding et al., 2001)

The benefits of transfer devices should be highlighted and patients should be taught to use transfer devices when convenient (i.e., when they are at home and have to device readily available).

  • Using a transfer device will reduce the amount of stress placed on their shoulders. 
  • However, if appropriate, patients should also be taught to do transfers without transfer devices to improve their independence
