Proper Wheelchair Transfer

Importance of Proper Transfer

Transfers are essential for everyday living of individuals with SCI

  • Individuals with paraplegia and tetraplegia retain independence by transferring themselves to cars, tubs, toilets, etc.
  • On average, there is a need to perform 15-20 transfers every day

The frequency of required transfers makes SCI patients highly susceptible to upper limb injury and pain.

Major problems:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Rotator cuff disease
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome
  • Elbow injury
