Important Tips

Transfer Motion

It is very important that the patient’s flight phase is smooth and controlled.

  • Fast and jerky transfers can pose a safety risk and create significant shear force.

 (PVA Guidelines, 2005)

Alternating Leading/Trailing Arms

Even if patient has a dominate/stronger arm, it is important to alternate which arm will lead/trail.

  • This will help to even out loading between the shoulders and arms and preserve joint health. (PVA Guidelines, 2005)
  • Research has shown that more work and force is exerted on the trailing arm over the leading.
