Handgrip

The patient will use a handgrip whenever possible for the leading arm

  • Handgrips can include be the wheelchair arm rests, edge of the mat table/bed, arm rests on chairs, the edge of a tub bench, or arm of bedside commode
  • If no handgrip is available, patients should keep their hand flat but maintain finger flexion if patient uses tenodesis
  • The patient should avoid placing either hand on a flat surface when a handgrip is present during the transfers
  • Educate patients that it is more important to prioritize maintaining the proper shoulder position over reaching for a faraway arm rest.
