Evidence - Tips

Vary the technique used and the arm that leads when possible

  • Research has shown that more work and force is exerted on the trailing arm over the leading. (Perry et al., 1996)
  • Promoting the use of the strongest or of the pain-free upper limb may be beneficial when the target seat is higher.
  • Restrictions occasionally encountered in the transfer envrionment may not allow accommodation for transfer direction.

(Gagnon et al., 2008)

Transfer Duration

  • SCI patients generally take between 1.65 to 2.6 seconds to complete a transfer
  • The Lift/pivot phase lasted roughly 1.0 second - 40% of total duration

Due to this, there is a need for rapid and coordinated multisegmental movement strategies while transfering

(Gagnon et al. 2008)
